The finding of this cave was by chance. In 1951, some excavation works in a limestone quarry revealed the cavity. The importance of this discovery quickly led to research in both the archaeological material and the painted hand representations, after their appearance in 1956.

First studies run by Carlos Callejo Serrano, make the scientific interest of this sanctuary so obvious for some of the most prestigious pre-historians of the time to visit it (such as M. Almagro and F. Jordá). It was declared Spanish National Monument in 1963.
Since then, different studies focused on its rock art manifestations have been carried out. The most outstanding ones are those of M. Almagro, J.L. Sanchidrián, E. Ripoll, S. Ripoll and H. Collado.
Maltravieso is, most of all, a Hand Sanctuary. Nevertheless, its 29 decorated panels show very different figures. Among these motifs, there are animals as deers, bovids, caprids, some headless animals and other very fine and elegant. There is also a significant group of figures composed by those idiomorphic, abstract signs difficult to understand. Five big groups have been found in the cave: triangular-shaped, series of dots, a meander-shaped one, a semicircle and sheafs of vertical lines.

Some of these motifs are shown combined among them or together with hand stencils. One of the most spectacular cases is the meander-shaped which is combined, at least, with nine hands.
All these elements are also shown in many Paleolithic Art Caves, but in any case, there are some motifs (among the idiomorphic ones) and also the hand stencils, which give Maltravieso its own hallmark.
